today i'm leaving athens for chattanooga, tennessee, for the southern sustainable agriculture working group's (ssawg's) twentieth annual conference. 

it's going to be several days of intensive learning, and i hope to find some time to drop some knowledge bombs on you all.  live action, real time, farm conference!  who's pumped!?

will i see any of you there?

this is going to be the first of two multi-day conferences i will be attending in january, and i expect to learn a ton.  the next conference will be ecofarm, a week from tomorrow, in pacific grove, california. 

who's got a gem of an idea for our one night out to dinner in san francisco the night after ecofarm?

brutus, the incredible pig dog.

we all love him, and you do to.  it's brutus, the amazing piglet/puppy dog who has stolen all of our hearts.  six months ago today, his late mother oprah gave birth to brutus, earl the pearl, and baby black nose, and i'd like to wish them three a very happy birthday!  brutus was cracking me up with this apple in his mouth--he wasn't gonna give it up for anything.

pigs in motion

moving the pigs to a new paddock is consistently a good time.  at pch, each new paddock is completely unused terrain.  it’s been just about a year since these hogs have been living in the woods on fowler farm, and each time we move them to a fresh paddock we are building new fence lines for them to occupy.  we spend a few solid days when it’s all said and done to map out a new paddock, establish a clean line, lay the new fence, electrify the whole system, and rotate the herd in.  what awaits, is a totally clean slate for the herd to discover.  check out the difference in these paddocks:

moses' favorite part of the day

running out ahead of the truck as i cross the cow pasture has to be one of moses' all time favorite activities.  he will stay just close enough to the front of the truck to make you worry, and so far, hasn't gotten run over.
